Postcards from Elsewhere

Curated inspiration, travel insight, and your monthly reminder that life is meant to be experienced.

Living Like A Local

One of the things I'm looking forward to most this month is sharing our everyday life in Portugal with my daughter, Najja, and her boyfriend, Stefan.

When we first moved here, everything felt new. We were the visitors, learning how life worked one experience at a time. Somewhere along the way, Portugal stopped feeling like a destination and started feeling like home. Now, for the first time, we get to experience it through the eyes of family who are seeing it all for the very first time.

Of course, we'll visit a few beautiful places. Stefan is especially excited to make the trip to Sagres, where the dramatic cliffs meet the Atlantic and some of Portugal's best surf breaks draw surfers from around the world. But I'm just as excited about introducing them to the little things that have quietly become part of our daily rhythm.

Morning coffee at a neighborhood snack bar. Catching the train to Faro instead of driving. Wandering without an agenda. Sitting down for dinner at 9:00 p.m. because that's simply when life slows down enough to gather around the table. The unhurried conversations, the fresh bread, the sound of Portuguese drifting through the cafés. These are the moments that make this place feel special.

Sometimes we think travel is about seeing the famous landmarks. But I've learned that the most meaningful experiences often happen in the ordinary moments that locals hardly notice anymore.

That's one of the greatest gifts of slow travel. Instead of asking, "What should I see?" you begin asking, "How do people live here?"

Because sometimes the best part of traveling is getting a glimpse of what life feels like from someone else's perspective.

Why Wellness Travel Is More Than A Trend

Sometimes the greatest luxury isn’t five-star accommodations; it’s finally feeling like yourself again.

There’s a reason wellness travel has become one of the fastest-growing trends in tourism.

People aren’t just looking for beautiful beaches or luxury resorts anymore.

🇬🇷 Featured Destination: Greece

Ancient greek ruins with columns under a clear sky.
Vibrant cliffside town with white buildings overlooking the blue ocean.
White buildings with blue domes overlook the ocean in santorini.
Charming outdoor cafe with white tables and chairs.

Who Would Love Greece?

Greece isn't just for history lovers or honeymooners; it's for travelers who desire experiences that linger long after they've returned home.

You'll love Greece if you find joy in long dinners overlooking the sea, wandering whitewashed villages with no particular destination, discovering family-run tavernas tucked down quiet streets, and ending your day watching the sun disappear into the Aegean.

It's a place where ancient history blends effortlessly with everyday life, where hospitality is more than good service...it's part of the culture. No matter if you're exploring centuries-old ruins, sailing between islands, or sharing a table filled with fresh seafood, olives, and local wine, Greece has a way of encouraging you to slow down and be present.

If your ideal vacation is less about checking off landmarks and more about collecting meaningful moments, Greece may just steal your heart.

Nikki's Perfect Greece Day

I'd begin the morning with a quiet coffee and a flaky spanakopita from a neighborhood bakery before wandering through charming streets as the island slowly wakes up.

Late morning would be spent exploring local shops and hidden corners, stopping whenever something catches my eye instead of following a strict itinerary.

Lunch would be at a seaside taverna, with fresh grilled sea bass, a fresh Greek salad, warm pita, and tzatziki while watching fishing boats drift across the harbor.

The afternoon calls for a swim in the crystal-clear Aegean Sea or relaxing on the beach with a good book before wandering back through town as the golden hour light settles over the whitewashed buildings.

I'd end the evening with dinner outdoors, lingering over conversation as the stars begin to fill the sky, reminded once again that some of life's best moments can't be rushed.

Come Experience Greece With Us

Some destinations are simply better when they're shared.

In June 2027, I will be hosting a small group trip through Greece, an opportunity to experience the beauty, history, and warmth of the Greek Islands alongside a community of like-minded travelers.

Our adventure begins with an optional pre-cruise stay, giving you time to settle into Greece before boarding a seven-night cruise through some of the country's most breathtaking destinations. Picture yourself wandering whitewashed villages, enjoying long dinners by the sea, exploring ancient ruins, and watching unforgettable sunsets from the deck of our ship.

The best part? You won't have to navigate the planning alone. We've thoughtfully designed this journey so you can focus on what matters most: experiencing Greece, making new friendships, and collecting memories that will stay with you long after you've returned home.

If Greece has been on your heart, we'd love for you to join us.

🎵 On Repeat This Month:

Run

by Foo Fighters

I'll admit it, I wasn't a Foo Fighters fan.

In fact, if it weren't for my husband, Mark, wanting to go to the concert, I probably never would have listened to much of their music. But sometimes saying yes to someone else's passion opens the door to discovering something you didn't know you needed.

Seeing them perform live completely changed my perspective.

The energy was contagious. Tens of thousands of people singing every word, the electricity of the crowd, and Dave Grohl's incredible stage presence made me understand why so many people love this band. Then they played "Run."

The moment I heard it live, I knew it would stay on repeat long after the concert ended.

"Wake up... Run for your life with me."

Those lyrics have become the soundtrack to this season of my life.

No, I don't think they're about running away. To me, they're about running toward the life you've been dreaming about instead of waiting for the perfect moment.

Waiting until work slows down.
Waiting until the kids are older.
Waiting until you have more money.
Waiting until you're less afraid.

I've realized that "running" often means choosing courage over comfort.

For me, it meant saying yes to moving to Portugal, building Mystical Traveling into something that reflects what I truly believe, and embracing experiences that once felt too far outside my comfort zone.

Travel has taught me that the biggest adventures don't always begin with a passport. They begin with a decision.

A decision to stop waiting.

A decision to trust yourself.

A decision to finally say yes.

So if there's something you've been putting off...a destination you've always dreamed of visiting, a new chapter you've been afraid to begin, or simply a life that feels more aligned with who you are, I hope this song reminds you of what it reminds me.

Life moves quickly.

Don't spend it standing still.

Run toward the life that's waiting for you.

The Backpack That Goes Everywhere

Every traveler has that one item they reach for before every trip.

For me, it's my bright orange backpack.

Mark has the same one in teal, and we've been carrying them for the past three years. We originally bought them before our Costa Rica adventure to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and since then they've been with us on just about every journey.

They've wandered through Portugal, crossed into Spain, been packed for concerts, road trips, beach days, train rides, and countless afternoons exploring new places.

What I love most is that they're practical without feeling bulky. They're waterproof (a huge plus when you're caught in an unexpected rain shower), have an insulated pocket that keeps drinks cold, and are surprisingly roomy without being oversized. They're comfortable enough to carry all day, whether we're wandering a city or spending the afternoon by the sea.

Travel doesn't always require expensive gear. Sometimes it's the simple things that prove themselves trip after trip.

If you're looking for a reliable daypack that's become one of our most-used travel companions, this is the one I recommend.

Quote of the Month

"With age comes wisdom. With travel comes understanding
Sandra Lake

The older I get, the more I realize that wisdom doesn't come from having all the answers. It comes from being willing to see the world from someone else's perspective.

Travel has a remarkable way of teaching us that.

When you sit in a neighborhood café in Portugal and watch friends linger over coffee for hours, you begin to understand that productivity isn't the only measure of a meaningful day.

When you share a meal with locals in Greece, wander through a market in Spain, or learn a few words in another language, you start to see that there isn't just one "right" way to live.

Every culture carries its own traditions, values, and rhythms. None are perfect, but each has something to teach us.

I sometimes wonder if our world would look a little different if more people had the opportunity to travel...not simply to take pictures, but to connect. To listen. To ask questions. To discover that the people who seem so different from us often want the very same things: to feel safe, to love their families, to laugh with friends, and to build a good life.

Travel doesn't erase our differences.

It helps us understand them.

And in that understanding, empathy begins to grow.

Every new destination challenges assumptions we didn't even know we had. Every conversation with someone from another culture expands the way we think. It's almost as if our minds create new pathways, making room for ideas and perspectives we may never have encountered if we'd stayed within the familiar.

Perhaps that's one of travel's greatest gifts.

It doesn't just change where we've been.

It changes how we see one another.

And in a world that sometimes feels divided, I can't think of a more meaningful journey than learning to understand someone else's story.
