Postcards from Elsewhere
Curated inspiration, travel insight, and your monthly reminder that life is meant to be experienced.
Chasing the Eclipse
When we first started dreaming about seeing the 2026 total solar eclipse, we planned a group trip to Iceland. It felt like the perfect combination: an incredible natural phenomenon in one of the most breathtaking places on Earth.
But life has a funny way of reminding us that plans are just the beginning of the story.
As we looked at moving to Portugal with schedules, budgets, and conflicting priorities, we realized that Iceland wasn’t going to work. Instead of letting go of the dream altogether, we asked ourselves a different question: What’s another way we can make this happen?
The answer was a family road trip through Portugal and Spain, where we’ll drive north through Porto before crossing into Spain to witness the eclipse. It’s a different adventure than we originally imagined, but one we’re just as excited about.
Travel has taught me that sometimes the destination isn’t what changes; it’s the path you take to get there. When we’re willing to stay open, what feels like a detour often becomes its own beautiful experience. Iceland hasn’t disappeared from our bucket list; it simply found a better place in the future. And when we do go, we’ll plan it during the winter months, when we’ll have the chance to witness another wonder of nature: the Northern Lights.
Whether you call it trusting the universe, trusting God’s timing, or simply staying open to life’s possibilities, I’ve found that some of the best journeys begin the moment we stop insisting on one specific outcome.
Maybe your next unforgettable trip isn’t the one you’ve been planning. Maybe it’s the one waiting for you to say “yes” to a different path.
Why Music Festivals and Concerts Make the Best Vacations
Sometimes the destination isn’t the reason you travel; it’s the soundtrack.
Have you ever booked a flight because your favorite artist announced a tour?
Maybe it was a bucket-list concert, a weekend music festival, or a once-in-a-lifetime performance you’ve dreamed about for years. If so, you’re not alone.

🇵🇹 Featured Destination: Portugal
Who Would Love Portugal?
Portugal isn’t the destination for travelers who want to rush from one attraction to the next. It’s for those who believe the best memories are often found in the moments between the itinerary.
You’ll probably fall in love with Portugal if you enjoy lingering over coffee at a neighborhood café, wandering through charming cobblestone streets without a map, discovering hidden beaches, savoring fresh seafood, or ending the day watching the sunset with a glass of local wine.
It’s a country that invites you to slow down, stay curious, and appreciate the simple beauty of everyday life.
Nikki’s Perfect Portugal Day
My perfect day starts with a quiet walk through Tavira as the town slowly wakes up. After grabbing a pastel de nata and coffee from a local bakery, I’d hop on the ferry to Ilha de Tavira for a relaxing morning by the ocean.
In the afternoon, I’d wander through the historic streets, browse a local market, and enjoy a leisurely lunch overlooking the river. As the evening cools, there’s nothing better than sharing a meal with friends at an outdoor restaurant before ending the day watching the sunset paint the Algarve sky in shades of gold and pink.
It’s not about packing as much as possible into one day, it’s about giving yourself permission to truly experience where you are.

🎵 On Repeat This Month:
Time After Time
by Cyndi Lauper
Some songs become more than music; they become memories.
Ever since our trip to Lisbon for Rock in Rio, Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper has been playing on repeat. Hearing it instantly transports me back to the excitement of seeing one of the artists I grew up listening to perform live, as well as the memories of listening to her songs as a child. It’s amazing how a single song can capture an entire moment in time.
This month also reminded me that life rarely unfolds exactly as we imagine. Between navigating unexpected challenges and deciding to shave my head, I’ve been reminded that we don’t have to wait until life feels “perfect” to keep making memories. In fact, some of our most meaningful adventures happen during the seasons that stretch us the most.
The lyrics, “If you’re lost, you can look and you will find me, time after time,” have taken on a new meaning for me. They remind me that no matter what chapter we’re in, there is always hope, love, and another opportunity to begin again.
Maybe that’s one of the greatest gifts of travel. It doesn’t erase life’s challenges, but it reminds us that joy and wonder can exist alongside them. Every journey becomes a marker in our story, and every song has the power to bring us back to the moments that shaped us.
Quote of the Month
"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”
St. Augustine
There was a time when I assumed there would always be another opportunity. Another trip. Another adventure. Another someday.
Living with chronic kidney disease and later receiving the incredible gift of a kidney transplant from my husband changed that perspective forever. It taught me that good health isn’t something to take for granted, and neither is the ability to explore this beautiful world.
That doesn’t mean I believe we need to travel constantly or chase every destination. Instead, it’s a reminder to say “yes” when the opportunity comes. To finally book the trip you’ve been dreaming about. To take the scenic route. To experience the concert, the eclipse, the quiet village café, or the conversation with a stranger that somehow stays with you long after you’ve returned home.
Every journey adds another page to our story. Some pages are filled with breathtaking views, others with unexpected detours, and a few with lessons we never saw coming. Looking back, I’m grateful for every single one of them.
So wherever your next adventure takes you, I hope you’ll keep turning the pages. Because the most meaningful stories are the ones we choose to live.
